THE Colne Rugby Academy had a showpiece fixture against the Wasps Academy.
Some of the professional club’s best young players were in action in the match, held at the Colne’s base at Colchester Rugby Club, in Mill Road.
Wasps eventually proved too strong, running out 50-12 winners.
However, Colne coach Phil Coleman said it was an excellent learning curve for his up-and-coming players.
“It was a close first half, with nothing given or taken, and we ran in two great tries to finish 17-12 behind,” he said. “In the second half, Wasps’ strength and fitness took over and they eventually ran out 50-12 winners.
“The game highlighted key areas for development but also showed that the squad has great potential.”
The Colne Academy, which offers full-time rugby coaching, regular fixtures and level three academic studies, is part of the Brightlingsea-based Colne Academy.
Any student or parent interested in the programme can contact the Colne College for more details or arrange to visit Mill Road.
Trials, by appointment, will be on Saturday, February 6 at Colchester Rugby Club, from 10am to 12pm.
