CLACTON-ON-SEA Golf Club’s seniors battled for the Cyril Rand Memorial Trophy.
Seniors captain Joe Middleton welcomed captain Ray Pryce and his team from Harwich & Dovercourt Golf Club to the Clacton club for the annual playing of the event.
Cyril Rand was a highly regarded police officer based in Harwich and Clacton and a very popular member of both clubs.
Results: Middleton and Rick Hale won against Pryce and Tony Boddy, Chris Marshall and Iain Wenman halved with Chris Day and Keith Morris, Robin Routh and John Fisher won against Peter Jim Brown and Tony Dumper, vice-captain Tony Burnside & Bill Highstead lost to Ron Taylor & Alan Scott, Bob Seggie & Dave Aylott lost to Colin Wallace & Bill Carter, Nigel Martin & Doug Nichols won against Maurice Tyrrell & Roderic Richardson, Ray Fage & John Willson halved with Sean O’Hara & Ray Burrows, John Kemp & Alf Smith lost to John Bishop & Mick Griggs, Peter Savage & Brian Viercant won against Bryan Austin & Malcolm Harman, Robert Gillespie & Ray Crossfield won against Jeff Murray & Brian Hindley, Bill Clarke & Jeff Sinnott lost to Charles Dennis & Ken Stableton, Derek Woodrow & John Wacker won against Ron Turner & Barrie Wheatley.
Clacton won the match 7-5 and Mrs Janet Rand presented the trophy to Middleton.
The ladies played for The Butler Cup; presented to the Ladies section in 1923, this is the Clacton Ladies’ sections second oldest trophy.
The winner was Kath Sinnott with 40 stableford points, while in second place was Lorna Forder with 37.
Barbara Mahoney was third with 36 on countback from Brenda Lord.
The men played for The St Helena Hospice Salver, on a bright sunny Sunday morning.
Scoring was low with Craig Green returning a winning score of 74-13-61 (ten under par) and a new handicap of eight.
In second place was Kyle Green with 72-6-66 and in third was Nick Tedder Ward with 71-4-67.
Clacton members played the Ferens Salver, presented to the club in 1932.
The mixed pairs competition was keenly contested over the Clacton links and the winners were Sue Gurry and Bob Davidson with 39 stableford points. In second place were lady vice-captain Gilly Cullen and vice-captain Nick Smith with 38 points. In third place were lady captain Julia Hewett and captain Steve Parkes with 37.
The juniors played their August medal on Tuesday morning.
The winner was Wilf Elliott with a score of 88-23-65 and a new handicap of 20.
In second place was Katy Yates with 78-7-71, Max Smith was third with 78-6-72, on countback, from Riley Faulkner with 77-5-72.
The August Mid-week Medal was won by Daniel Howard-King with 85-22-63, in second was Ronald Marsham with 93-25-68, on countback, from Daniel Suen with 81-13-68 Clacton’s lady vice-captain Gilly Cullen and Brenda Lord travelled to Bedford County Golf Club to play in the regional finals of the English Golf Union’s coveted Australian Spoons competition.
They both played well on the unfamiliar course.
However, they fell short of returning a winning score which would have taken them to the national final for a second time.
