ON May 17, there was an interesting talk by Margaret Brehaut about the lives of the Amish people in Pennsylvania. Margaret had been to America several times on a tour to visit the Amish and see their beautiful quilts and understand the way they live. They live by very strict rules which have been passed down many generations. Everyone is dressed the same in dark colours and they let their hair grow then scrape it back in a tight bun. They are not poor in wealth but very restricted in the activities they are allowed.
Making quilts seems to be the main occupation apart from farming the land. They make good money by having sales of all the quilts produced (without the benefit of electricity).
The next meeting will be on June 21, when member Dorothy Hart will speak about her life in nursing, 7.30pm in the Parish Room.
