A WINE buff got a shock when a bargain French wine from Tesco turned out to be counterfeit.
Danny McGowan of Clacton Road, St Osyth, bought up two bottles of the white burgundy Louis Jadot Pouilly-Fuisse wine at the Tesco, reduced from £14.99 to £5.
But when he opened the bottle, he immediately realised something was wrong.
The 43-year-old said: “I am not an expert but I know my wines.
“The label was Pouilly-Fuisse which is a French dry white burgundy but it was a German hock.
“It would have been worth about £2.99. it was not very good.”
Mr McGowan said the label also looked photocopied and the bottle had a screw cap instead of the usual cork.
Tesco spokesman Rory Stoves said: "We are aware of this issue and are currently investigating as a matter of urgency with our suppliers.
"A very small number of the counterfeit bottles have been found and fortunately most were uncovered in the supply chain before they reached the shelves in store.
"We have received a handful of complaints from customers who have of course received an apology and a replacement product."
