I was out and about delivering my local survey in Clacton, Jaywick and Little Oakley at the weekend. But perhaps my most important stop was a visit to Weeley Heath.
Agriculture is a vital part of our local economy and there are over 100 farms in the Clacton constituency.
James Martin runs a small family farm that’s now into its third generation. Labour’s Budget has been the most enormous shock to him and many others. Farmers up and down the country are in much distress.
Labour’s changes to the agricultural property relief will mean that thousands of small farms all across the UK will be subject to extra costs.
A great number of these only make a modest profit, so it would be the final nail in the coffin.
This devastating move will also disincentivise farming for young people and the next generation, which will seriously undermine the UK's food security and create needless problems for us all.
This was not the only issue I had with last week’s budget. There will be a negative impact on small businesses in Clacton, particularly due to the national insurance increase on employers. This will surely have a knock-on effect when it comes to jobs.
I stood up in the House of Commons and told the government that we are in much deeper trouble as a country than anybody cares to admit. Very few members of the Labour front bench have ever had a proper job, and the business secretary has never even run a business!
I made the point that success and hard work is a good thing, and it’s the only way that we are going to recover our economy — which the OBR says is now unlikely to grow much over the next five years.
Alongside the Reform MPs, I have written to Rachel Reeves this week to demand that she thinks again and ends her war on the small family farm.
If any local farmers want to meet me at the mass lobby for NFU members on Tuesday, November 19 at Church House in Westminster, I will be there.
