PLANS to turn an old pub into a home and build a new bungalow on the site have been criticised by councillors.

The Lions Den in Great Holland closed in 2001 after owners decided it was not viable.

And new owners of the site want to adapt the now derelict pub into a residential property.

Their plan also includes creating a new detached bungalow to the side of the pub.

It has upset some Great Holland residents who want to see the building returned to its former use.

The application came before Frinton and Walton Town Council last week and councillor Brian Johnson said: “I think it is a good and sensible idea.

“The pub is never going to come back. It was not well supported enough, and I think anyone who thinks otherwise is clutching at straws.

“This would see the site tidied up and put into good use again.”

But other councillors had major concerns over the proposal.

They criticised the lack of parking provisions in the plan and the fact no consultation had been carried out with highways, despite the site’s close proximity to a busy junction.

The town council recommended refusal of the application. Tendring Council will have the final say on the plans.
