Dr.Eric William LEIGH Eric died on Sunday 13th September, age 91. The much Loved Husband of Mary (who sadly died in April this year) and devoted Father of Nicholas, Tamsin and Jessica, died peacefully in his sleep after a long illness. His early years were spent in St Austell (Cornwall) where he attended private schools and learnt his skills on piano and organ. He then went to University where he attained an honours degree in Music from University of London. During the war years, Eric served with the Royal Navy as Sub Lieutenant aboard HMS Newcastle, experiencing active service in the Far East. Later he trained as a teacher and taught his discipline in several state grammar schools in the Southampton area. The family moved to Derbyshire where Eric was appointed Head of Music for the combined Derby Colleges (latter day Derby University). He was also appointed chief organist at Derby Cathedral, a post that he proudly held for many years. In 1963 he was made a D.Mus (Dr.Of Music) and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists. In 1982, Eric and Mary moved to Frinton where Eric became a valued member of the Clacton Choral Society. He managed their choir 'Guadaemus', which made a speciality of singing choral evening in East Anglia and other Cathedrals. With his teaching music, wit and art, Eric was a well-respected, rich personality and will be sadly missed by those who loved and knew him. Funeral service will be held at Weeley Crematorium on Wednesday October 14th at 3.30pm
